Learning Organizations — notes. The objectives of organizational learning being to expand thinking patterns and create the results that are desired by the people within the organization. Gavin recognizes three critical issues for a learning organization, the three Ms; meaning; management; measurement. Griffin also views the learning organization from the perspective of a manager, whereby any learning by the employees is to be put to use in order for the organization to develop. Strauss et al and Griffin have similar views on the learning organization as an organization that learns by gathering data and using that data to efficiently adapt to a changing environment. Success in the business world will come from the learning organization model where change is managed more effectively than previously and creates a competitive edge over the competition. Shell and McDonalds are named as learning organizations because of their learning centers e.

Organisational learning and organisational design
Although individual learning has elicited substantial theoretical and empirical attention for well over years, systematic work on how groups and organizations learn from their experience, retain the knowledge they acquire, and transfer this knowledge is much more recent. Moreover, because the literatures on group and organizational learning developed relatively independently, few efforts have been made to analyze their similarities and differences. The goals of this Handbook are to provide comprehensive and up-to-date reviews of both fields by leading scholars, to identify important cross-cutting themes, and to suggest productive avenues for future research. Contributions are organized under two major headings -- 1 processes of group and organizational learning and 2 contextual influences on group and organizational learning. The former includes chapters on mindfulness of learning processes, information sampling and search, information processing and interpretation, training, remembering and retaining knowledge, performance feedback and social comparisons, learning from others and transferring knowledge, and innovation and creating knowledge. The latter includes chapters on unit composition, structures and routines, intergroup contexts, and online environments. An integrative chapter identifies connections between the chapters and also points out directions for future research.
Handbook on Knowledge Management 1 pp Cite as. This chapter examines the interdependent relationship of learning and the emerging discipline of knowledge management KM. Following a clarification of definitions, the common ground is explored in terms of structure, strategy, technology, leadership, and environment. Specific areas of intersection addressed include individual learning and KM; learning and communities of practice; learning and systems thinking, and learning and flow. A learning continuum is presented to illuminate the relationship between learning and the environment as change drives new knowledge needs.

A knowledge perspective on needs to enhance organizational learning
This review analyzes the results of empirical studies on organizational learning OL in public organizations. We used integrative review method to research two international databases. By applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, twelve publications were selected for analysis. The results indicated that OL in public organizations is a relatively recent topic and little explored in empirical studies. Mostly consisting of qualitative studies, they describe OL with a focus on organizational changes and identify elements that inhibit e.
This paper aims to focus on research regarding organizational learning OL and knowledge management KM , and to specifically investigate whether OL has been conceptually absorbed by KM. The method used in this study is a systematic literature review covering KM and OL publications from the s, when the OL field started to grow, up to Nuclear processes of OL, creation and acquisition of knowledge, have been conceptually absorbed by KM literature in the past years. However, these databases include a large number of articles on KM and OL. Search terms used could exclude some relevant terms, although all major descriptive terms have been included.
The purpose of this paper is to explore a new idea presenting the possible relationship between organisational learning and organisational design. Organisational learning theory has been used to understand several organisational phenomena, like resources and competencies, tacit knowledge or the role of memory in the organisation; however, it is difficult to identify fits and consequent misfits between organisational learning and the organisational design. This is a theoretical paper, so there is a possible limitation, regarding the lack of empirical support. At the end of the paper a number of recommendations regarding the organisational design are suggested, in order to promote organisational learning in the firms.
