The major environmental issue for industrial countries throughout the 70s and 80s has been the management of hazardous wastes. This issue has manifested itself in the form of two questions: how to prevent environmental deterioration caused by the generation of hazardous wastes, and how to effectively clean up the problems caused by past examples of improper disposal.

This chapter analyses the status quo of e-waste management in three global regions, where the European Union represents a frontrunner in environmental legislation and implementation; China, catching up with recent legislation and large-scale investments in recycling infrastructure; and Vietnam, as an example for the numerous countries where an unregulated situation dominates. This chapter aims at giving an overview of the management of this waste stream focussing on two relevant stages in the material recovery chain: collection as the interface between consumers and waste management and treatment with an overview of technologies applied for the removal of hazardous materials and the recovery of valuable materials such as steel, copper, plastics and others. Challenges for these situations are identified. End-of-life electrical and electronic equipment here referred to as e-waste is more complex than other waste streams in terms of material composition and the content of hazardous materials. This article reviews the recent BMWM rules, practical problems for its effective implementation, the major drawback of conventional techniques, and the latest eco-friendly methods for BMW disposal. The new rules are meant to improve the segregation, transportation, and disposal methods, to decrease environmental pollution so as to change the dynamic of BMW disposal and treatment in India. For effective disposal of BMWM, there should be a collective teamwork with committed government support in terms of finance and infrastructure development, dedicated health-care workers and health-care facilities, continuous monitoring of BMW practices, tough legislature, and strong regulatory bodies. This book chapter discusses the management of hazardous waste in developing countries, with particular emphasis on industrial hazardous waste, medical waste, and household hazardous waste. It seeks to identify the current situation and also aims to provide a review of the existing strategies that are particularly related to hazardous waste management. In developing countries, hazardous waste management systems lack a systematic approach to administer waste management programmes; inability to effectively collect and manage wastes as well as to reduce the negative impacts of those activities. The current regulatory frameworks and regulations do not adequately address hazardous waste treatment and final disposal. There are inadequacies in the implementation of regulations associated with hazardous waste management due to fragmented responsibilities among government departments and local authorities. The chapter provides practical best processes for the management of hazardous waste aimed at improving the current situation.
