More information about tuition fees. Colloid and Surface Chemistry is an advanced course that provides you with an in-depth understanding of the physicochemical mechanisms that govern nanoscopic and microscopic particles. You will learn about particle dispersions, surfactant and polymer solutions, emulsions and foams, as well as about the phenomena of micelle formation, surface tension, diffusion, electrophoresis, and light scattering. Colloids contain small particles ranging in size from a few nanometers up to about one micrometer, very often dispersed in a liquid. A characteristic feature of colloids is that the interfacial area between the particles and the surrounding liquid always becomes very large, which means that the chemistry that occurs at or near this interface becomes decisive for the properties of colloids.

Applied Colloid and Surface Chemistry

Fundamental principles of colloid and surface chemistry. Thermodynamics of surface tension, adsorption and interacting surfaces and related experimental methods. The aim of the course is to provide a broad, fundamental basis in surface and colloid chemistry and its applications. Holmberg et al. If the course is discontinued, students may request to be examined during the following two academic years. The examiner may apply another examination format when re-examining individual students. Mark Rutland.

Flotation is an interfacial separation technique based on the differences in surface hydrophobicity of dispersed particles, and it plays a critical role in mineral processing industry. In a flotation pulp, mineral particles, bubbles, and reagents are highly dispersed and interact each other through high speed impeller agitation, which is a typical example of applied colloidal science. Colloidal interactions are the key process for successful flotation. In recent years, with the rapid depletion of high-grade ore deposits, an increasing number of complex and refractory ores are being used as flotation feed, resulting in decreased flotation efficiency. Therefore, a comprehensive understanding of flotation colloid chemistry is a prerequisite to enhance practical flotation performances and adapt them for the treatment of complex and refractory ores. There has been a strong interest in the colloid chemistry of flotation.
