This book is a collection of essays and lectures written by Hawking, mainly about the makeup of black holes , and why they might be nodes from which other universes grow. Hawking discusses black hole thermodynamics , special relativity , general relativity , and quantum mechanics. Hawking also describes his life when he was young, and his later experience of motor neurone disease.
Black Holes and Baby Universes and Other Essays
In his phenomenal bestseller A Brief History of Time, Stephen Hawking literally transformed the way we think about physics, the universe, reality itself.
In these thirteen essays and one remarkable extended interview, the man widely regarded as the most brilliant theoretical physicist since Einstein returns to reveal an amazing array of possibilities for understanding our universe. With his characteristic mastery of language, his sense of humor and commitment to plain speaking, Stephen Hawking invites us to know him better—and to share his passion for the voyage of intellect and imagination that has opened new ways to understanding the very nature of the cosmos.

Widely regarded as the most brilliant theoretical physicist since Einstein, he has opened our minds to today's most important scientific ideas about the cosmos. Now Stephen Hawking returns to shed new light on the darkest regions of space and time Building on his earlier work, Stephen Hawking discusses imaginary time, how black holes can give birth to baby universes, and scientists' efforts to find a complete unified theory that would predict everything in the universe, a concept that he believes will come to seem as natural to the next generation as the idea that the world is round.
He looks at how science theory converges with - and diverges from - science fiction, as well as how science fact interfaces with our own lives. Severely disabled by ALS - Lou Gehrig's disease - he describes the way in which this has affected but not constrained his personal and intellectual life: from the special computer technology that lets him translate his thoughts into words and his words into sounds, enabling him to write and speak, to the process of evolving his ideas, teaching his students, and working with his colleagues.

We discuss the essential features of baby-universe production, start- ing from a description of black holes and wormholes, in terms of the causal.
Black Holes and Baby Universes
Hawking has recently pointed out that black holes cannot evaporate and disappear through wormholes because the entropy of a baby universe would not equal its size squared times some proportionality constant. In this report it is shown that multiply connected Euclidean wormhole spacetimes can be associated with nonlinear dynamic laws which are analogous to those of nonequilibrium thermodynamics, making plausible a full generalization of thermodynamics encompassing both nonequilibrium and gravitational effects. It is seen that both at equilibrium and out of it baby universe thermodynamics can provide the right relation between the size of the originating black hole and its entropy. Pedro F.
We revisit such ideas, using features associated with a negative cosmological constant and asymptotically AdS boundaries to strengthen the results, introduce a change in perspective, and connect with recent replica wormhole discussions of the Page curve. A key new feature is an emphasis on the role of null states. We explore this structure in detail in simple topological models of the bulk that allow us to compute the full spectrum of associated boundary theories. The dimension of the asymptotically AdS Hilbert space turns out to become a random variable Z , whose value can be less than the naive number k of independent states in the theory. We argue that a similar property must hold in any consistent gravitational path integral.

Very readable.
