In psychology , a dual process theory provides an account of how thought can arise in two different ways, or as a result of two different processes. Often, the two processes consist of an implicit automatic , unconscious process and an explicit controlled , conscious process.

A cognitive bias is a systematic error in thinking that occurs when people are processing and interpreting information in the world around them and affects the decisions and judgments that they make. Cognitive biases are often a result of your brain's attempt to simplify information processing. Biases often work as rules of thumb that help you make sense of the world and reach decisions with relative speed.

In this article we will demonstrate how cognitive psychological research on reasoning and decision making could enhance discussions and theories of moral judgments. In the first part, we will present recent dual-process models of moral judgments and describe selected studies which support these approaches. However, we will also present data that contradict the model predictions, suggesting that approaches to moral judgment might be more complex. In the second part, we will show how cognitive psychological research on reasoning might be helpful in understanding moral judgments. Specifically, we will highlight approaches addressing the interaction between intuition and reflection. Our data suggest that a sequential model of engaging in deliberation might have to be revised. Therefore, we will present an approach based on Signal Detection Theory and on intuitive conflict detection.

Dual process theory

Examine the complex individual influences central to the way in which decision making is pursued, most notably the cognitive, normative, and psychological perspectives. Decision making is inherently a cognitive activity, the result of thinking that may be either rational or irrational i. Individual characteristics including personality and experience influence how people make decisions. From the psychological perspective, decisions are often weighed against a set of needs and augmented by individual preferences.

Complex cognition: the science of human reasoning, problem-solving, and decision-making

In psychology , decision-making also spelled decision making and decisionmaking is regarded as the cognitive process resulting in the selection of a belief or a course of action among several possible alternative options, it could be either rational or irrational. Decision-making process is a reasoning process based on assumptions of values , preferences and beliefs of the decision-maker. Research about decision-making is also published under the label problem solving , particularly in European psychological research. Decision-making can be regarded as a problem-solving activity yielding a solution deemed to be optimal, or at least satisfactory. It is therefore a process which can be more or less rational or irrational and can be based on explicit or tacit knowledge and beliefs. Tacit knowledge is often used to fill the gaps in complex decision making processes. A major part of decision-making, involves the analysis of a finite set of alternatives described in terms of evaluative criteria.

Climate change, globalization, policy of peace, and financial market crises—often we are faced with very complex problems. In order to tackle these complex problems, the responsible people should first come to mutual terms. An additional challenge is that typically the involved parties have different often conflicting interests and relate the problems to different emotions and wishes. These factors certainly do not ease the quest for a solution to these complex problems. It is needless to say that the big problems of our time are not easy to solve. Less clear, however, is identifying the causes that led to these problems. Interest conflicts between social groups, the economic and social system or greed—one can think of many responsible factors for the large-scale problems we are currently confronted with.
