The lens is a transparent biconvex structure in the eye that, along with the cornea , helps to refract light to be focused on the retina. By changing shape, it functions to change the focal length of the eye so that it can focus on objects at various distances, thus allowing a sharp real image of the object of interest to be formed on the retina. This adjustment of the lens is known as accommodation see also below.

The material in this chapter is provided as an introduction to those aspects of the anatomy and physiology of both the eye and skin which should be familiar to those working extensively in the field of optical radiation safety. This chapter is neither a comprehensive nor a detailed treatment of these subjects. It is primarily intended for those who have not had specialized training in the life sciences and it can be conveniently bypassed by anyone who is familiar with the subject. Hopefully, it may also serve as a review of the anatomy and physiology of the skin and eye for those who have not studied this subject for some time. The eye in itself and the subject of vision in general are fascinating subjects about which there are vast bodies of literature. However, in this chapter, emphasis will be placed upon those aspects of ocular anatomy and physiology which are important to this study: the optical properties of the ocular media cornea, aqueous, lens, and vitreous , retinal structure, and image formation.

Physiology of the Eye, Fourth Edition reviews major advances in the physiology of the eye, including improvements in photochemical and electrophysiological techniques. In particular, the successful application of modern microelectrode techniques to the recording of activity at all stages in the visual pathway is considered. This edition is organized into four sections encompassing 23 chapters and begins with an overview of the anatomy of the eye and its vegetative physiology and biochemistry, paying particular attention to the aqueous humor and the intraocular pressure, the vitreous body, the cornea, and the lens. The discussion then shifts to the mechanism of vision, including its photochemical aspects and muscular mechanisms, and the neurophysiology of visual perception. Advances in electrophysiology of the receptors, and of the central nervous pathways of vision and eye movement, are examined along with the remarkable developments in separative techniques of the lens crystallins and the biochemical aspects of lens transparency. This book is a valuable resource for students and researchers in fields ranging from ocular science to physiology and biochemistry.

Physiology of the Eye

Jump to content. The five senses include sight, sound, taste, hearing and touch. Sight, like the other senses is closely related to other parts of our anatomy. The eye is connected to the brain and dependent upon the brain to interpret what we see. How we see depends upon the transfer of light. Light passes through the front of the eye cornea to the lens.

The iris, the structure that gives the eyes color, works like a shutter in a camera. It has the ability to enlarge and shrink, depending on how much light the environment is sending into the pupil. This clear, flexible structure works much like the lens in a camera — shortening and lengthening its width in order to focus light rays properly. In a normal eyeball, after exiting the back of the lens, the light rays pass through the vitreous — a clear, jelly-like substance that fills the globe of the eyeball. The vitreous humor helps the eye hold its spherical shape. Finally, the light rays land and come to a sharp focusing point on the retina. It is responsible for capturing all of the light rays, processing them into light impulses through millions of tiny nerve endings, then sending these light impulses through over a million nerve fibers to the optic nerve.

Anatomy of the Eye

Vision is the special sense of sight that is based on the transduction of light stimuli received through the eyes. The eyes are located within either orbit in the skull. The bony orbits surround the eyeballs, protecting them and anchoring the soft tissues of the eye Figure

The eye is embryologically an extension of the central nervous system. It shares many common anatomical and physiological proper- ties with the brain.
