Principles of recovery oriented mental health practice
The principles of recovery oriented mental health practice are relevant to all of the 10 national standards and apply to the whole mental health service system, including the non-government community mental health service sector. From the perspective of the individual with mental illness, recovery means gaining and retaining hope, understanding of one's abilities and disabilities, engagement in an active life, personal autonomy, social identity, meaning and purpose in life, and a positive sense of self. It is important to remember that recovery is not synonymous with cure. Recovery refers to both internal conditions experienced by persons who describe themselves as being in recovery — hope, healing, empowerment and connection — and external conditions that facilitate recovery — implementation of human rights, a positive culture of healing, and recovery-oriented services. Jacobson and Greenley, p. They are: 1. Uniqueness of the individual Recovery oriented mental health practice: recognises that recovery is not necessarily about cure but is about having opportunities for choices and living a meaningful, satisfying and purposeful life, and being a valued member of the community accepts that recovery outcomes are personal and unique for each individual and go beyond an exclusive health focus to include an emphasis on social inclusion and quality of life empowers individuals so they recognise that they are at the centre of the care they receive.
Psychosocial rehabilitation services and supports are collaborative, person directed, and individualized, and an essential element of the human services spectrum. They focus on helping individuals develop skills and access resources needed to increase their capacity to be successful and satisfied in the living, working, learning and social environments of their choice and include a wide continuum of services and supports. The following Core Principles and Values are meant to further describe key elements of Psychosocial Rehabilitation practice. These principles and values are related to evidence-based PSR practices and informed by the lived experiences of individuals with mental health challenges. Psychosocial rehabilitation practitioners convey hope and respect, and believe that all individuals have the capacity for learning and growth. Psychosocial rehabilitation practitioners recognize that culture and diversity are central to recovery, and strive to ensure that all services and supports are culturally relevant to individuals receiving services and supports.
Through the 12 Core Principles and Values, PRA further describes the key elements of psychiatric rehabilitation practice. Principle 1: Psychiatric rehabilitation practitioners convey hope and respect, and believe that all individuals have the capacity for learning and growth. Principle 2: Psychiatric rehabilitation practitioners recognize that culture is central to recovery, and strive to ensure that all services are culturally relevant to individuals receiving services. Principle 4: Psychiatric rehabilitation practices build on the strengths and capabilities of individuals. Principle 6: Psychiatric rehabilitation practices support full integration of people in recovery into their communities where they can exercise their rights of citizenship, as well as to accept the responsibilities and explore the opportunities that come with being a member of a community and a larger society. All individuals have the right to make their own decisions, including decisions about the types of services and supports they receive.
Jeremiah Schimp. Psychiatric rehabilitation is rooted in the hope of recovery and increased quality of life for those with mental illness. To best understand psychiatric rehabilitation, we must look at the three core principle components: emotional, social, and vocationalwellbeing. Mental health providers often witness how the impact of severe mental illness curtails effective life skills and functional abilities in their clients. We will examine the three core components below. Psychiatric rehabilitation refers to community treatment of people with mental disorders. Community treatment has recently become far more widespread due to deinstitutionalization at government facilities. This book is an update of the first edition's discussion of types of mental disorders, including etiology, symptoms, course, and outcome, types of community treatment programs, case management strategies, and vocational and educational rehabilitation. Providing a comprehensive overview of this rapidly growing field, this book is suitable both as a textbook for undergraduate and graduate courses, a training tool for mental health workers, and a reference for academic researchers studying mental health.
